For over ten years Chantiques has been importing solid-wood garden and indoor furniture along with wood carvings an accessories from Indonesia to our showroom in Portland, Oregon. Along the way, we have come to love Indonesia's natural beauty, culture, and woodworking industry.
Our name comes from the Indonesian word cantik (pronounced “chan-TEEK”) which translates as “lovely” and “beautiful” in the Indonesian Language.
Our Indonesian warehouse and shipping center is located in north-central Java, in an area that is home to a bustling woodworking trade. Java is just one of over 18,000 islands which comprise the Republic of Indonesia, the world’s fourth-most populated country. While Java is one of the most densely populated places on earth, most of Indonesia is vastly underpopulated.
The craftsmen in our town are highly-skilled furniture makers utilizing traditional techniques that often take an ingenious turn. The result is wooden furniture that is durable, unique and charming. If you take a close look at our products, you will notice that each piece has its own special charm. Corners are often dove-tailed. Joinery is mortise and tenon. The bottoms of drawers and the backs of cabinets are constructed of solid-wood panel systems, much like the doors in older Portland homes. Rather than striving for perfection, as with most factory-produced furniture, our solid wood products often exhibit the natural artifacts of living wood. While not affecting the structural integrity of a piece, these artifacts indicate a craft where wood is a prized resource and every precious bit of hardwood is utilized.
Our owner, Keith Miller, has lived part-time in Indonesia for over ten years, Keith has immersed himself in its amazing culture, learning the language and the foods. In 2003, Keith published his cookbook; Indonesian Street Food Secrets, (available in our showroom). Nowadays Keith scours Java and other islands of the Indonesian archipelago looking for unique items to import. Antique poster beds from of an old hotel are utilized to make room dividers. Wheels from the dokar, the Indonesian horse cab, are refashioned into tables. Slabs of dense, richly-grained tahunan wood are made into unique benches. In our warehouse in Jepara, finely-crafted reproductions are created in the image of Asian, American, and European antiques.
Chantiques takes great pride in employing the local people of Jepara, paying better than average wages, and providing medical and leave benefits. We give back 10% of our profits to programs that assist the local Indonesian community as well as re-forestation projects. We also educate ourselves and our employees regarding eco-friendly business practices, such as conserving energy, recycling, and buying sustain-ably harvested woods.
